Film reports say Suriya is in talks for a coastal action drama with Mathimaran Pugazhendi, who directed the Soori-led Mandaadi. The reports come from Pinkvilla and 123telugu.
Pinkvilla reported on 29 October 2026 that the project is a large-scale action drama set on the coast, with the tentative working title Suriya49. The reports remain unconfirmed, and Suriya has yet to officially announce the project.

Mandaadi, the Film Behind the Director
Mandaadi is a sports action drama, according to IANS. Its title draws on the maritime culture of Tamil Nadu's coastal belt and embodies the spirit of people with exceptional skill, determination and leadership in navigating the challenges of the sea.
The film stars Soori and Mahima Nambiar, and Suhas, a Telugu actor, makes his Tamil debut in a pivotal role, according to DT Next. Sathyaraj, Ravindra Vijay, Mithun and Balasaravanan have important supporting parts.
DT Next says a mandaadi is the leader of a fishing team in a traditional sailing boat race along a 100-km stretch of the Tamil Nadu coast. The plot centres on a fishing captain who uses his maritime knowledge in a race during a festival, leading a six-person team against the crew.
IANS and DT Next both say Soori performed the high-risk sea action himself, and IANS adds that he trained for several months for the sailboat racing scenes.
Mandaadi was scheduled for release in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi in September 2026. IANS gives 4 September as the worldwide date. DT Next gives 10 September, though one of its articles also says 4 September. 123telugu says the film received critical praise and was a major box office success.

How Mandaadi Was Shot and Certified

DT Next reports that the makers' wrap-up video showed cast and crew injuries sustained during production. On 4 October 2025, a boat carrying the camera capsized mid-shoot; the crew escaped unhurt, but the camera sank, according to DT Next.
DT Next reports that the film has received a U/A 16+ certificate from the CBFC. The teaser opens with sailors preparing boats for a race, with a voiceover from Sathyaraj about competition.
DT Next names Elred Kumar as the producer under the RS Infotainment banner, and says GV Prakash Kumar composed the songs and background score.
The audio launch was held on 28 August 2026 in Chennai, and the film is reported at 154 minutes, according to DT Next.

Pinkvilla says Suriya and Thanu were earlier expected to work together on Vaadivaasal, directed by Vetrimaaran. That project has faced prolonged delays, but Thanu has recently indicated it remains on the cards, according to the report.
