Indian Super League Opens With 13 Clubs; 65 Million YouTube Views Reported for Week One
The 13-club league opened on 10 October 2026 with a home-and-away format and a six-team ISL Cup playoff, and its first week drew 65 million YouTube views, according to Outlook India citing ESPN.

The Indian Super League's 2026-27 season began on 10 October 2026 with 13 clubs, a home-and-away league and a playoff for the ISL Cup. Matches are free on the league's YouTube channel, and Sony Sports and SonyLIV carry the season in India.
In the first week, Outlook India reported 65 million YouTube views across five matches, citing figures attributed to ESPN. The report was published on 15 October. The numbers show strong online interest in a free stream, but they cover one week and one platform, so they say little about the league's total audience or its income.
Thirteen Clubs, With Jamshedpur Out
The season features Bengaluru FC, Chennaiyin FC, Churchill Brothers FC, East Bengal FC, FC Goa, Inter Kashi, Kerala Blasters FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Mumbai City FC, NorthEast United FC, Odisha FC, Punjab FC and Sporting Club Delhi. East Bengal are the defending champions, according to Wikipedia and Outlook India's season guide.
The schedule page gives the total as 14 teams, which Wikipedia says was the count before Jamshedpur withdrew.
Jamshedpur FC is not among them. ESPN reported on 31 July that the club missed the 20 July deadline to confirm its participation and pay the first instalment of its fee. The delay was tied to the need for shareholder approval, under a structure in which clubs take a more direct operational role.
The league has also moved to a club-led commercial model. Clubs collectively hold the league's commercial rights, according to Outlook India and Wikipedia.
A Home-and-Away League Feeds a Six-Team ISL Cup
Each club plays the other 12 twice, once at home and once away, so each plays 24 league matches. Outlook India describes this as a return to the double round-robin format after the truncated format of the previous season. The top six at the end of the league stage qualify for the ISL Cup playoffs, which return after a season without them, according to Wikipedia and The Bridge.
The team at the top of the table wins the Shield. Sources differ on which trophy makes the season's champion. Outlook India says the ISL Cup playoffs will determine the champion, while The Bridge calls the Shield winner the official champion of the league.
The season runs from 10 October 2026 to May 2027, according to Wikipedia, Outlook India and The Bridge. The schedule page gives April 2027 as the end date, and it lists fixtures through 17 January 2027. The Bridge puts the total at 163 matches.
Opening Week: 65 Million Views Across Five Matches
Outlook India, citing ESPN, reported that the five opening-week matches, played from 10 to 12 October, drew 65 million YouTube views and reached 52 million viewers. They also recorded 16.8 million engaged views and 1.6 million live interactions. The channel added 120,000 subscribers, taking its total to 2.7 million.
The opener, Bengaluru FC against Sporting Club Delhi, drew 8.9 million views and a peak of 85,277 concurrent viewers on the English feed. NorthEast United against Mohun Bagan drew 17 million views on the English feed and topped the Hindi feed with 100,660 viewers.
The highest English-feed peak was 349,073 concurrent viewers for Inter Kashi against Kerala Blasters, played on 11 October. That is the biggest English-feed peak reported.
What the Views and Reach Do and Do Not Show
The reports give views and viewers reached as separate numbers, so 65 million views is not 65 million people. The 52 million reach figure is the report's separate count of viewers reached, though it still covers one platform and five matches. It also cannot be compared directly with television ratings, which the reports do not provide.
Peak concurrent viewership is a separate measure. It records the most people watching at one moment for a single match, and the English-feed peaks reported are 85,277 for the opener and 349,073 for Inter Kashi against Kerala Blasters. A high peak can come from one big match, so these figures say little about how many people watch a typical fixture.
Because the YouTube feed is free, the view count does not show paying viewers. The 1.6 million live interactions and 120,000 new subscribers show engagement on a free channel, not subscription income. The reports give no television audience figures for the Sony channels, so they do not show the split between television and online viewing.
The reports give views and viewers reached as separate numbers, so 65 million views is not 65 million people.
Broadcast Partners, Sponsorship and the Money Behind Them
Google streams all matches on YouTube globally, and the league's YouTube channel offers them free, according to Wikipedia and Outlook India's season guide. That makes matches available to viewers outside India. Sony Sports holds the satellite television rights and streams on SonyLIV in India, according to Wikipedia.
MG Motor is the title sponsor. Outlook India's guide calls it Morris Garages, and Wikipedia reports a two-year sponsorship worth more than ₹25 crore.
The sources give no fee for the Sony and Google arrangements, so the first-week viewing numbers cannot be set against the money the league receives.
Early Fixtures and What to Watch
The opening five matches were played from 10 to 12 October. Bengaluru FC played Sporting Club Delhi at Kanteerava Stadium at 5pm on 10 October, and FC Goa met Chennaiyin FC at Fatorda Stadium, Goa, at 7.30pm the same day. Kick-off times are as listed on the schedule page; Outlook India gives the 10 October Goa match as 7:30 PM IST.
Inter Kashi played Kerala Blasters at 5pm on 11 October, and Churchill Brothers met Mumbai City at Fatorda at 7.30pm. NorthEast United met Mohun Bagan at Sarusajai Stadium, Guwahati, at 7.30pm on 12 October.
The early table matters for the Shield and for the six places in the ISL Cup, since both are decided by the league stage. The first-week figures cover only those five matches. Readers should watch whether the 349,073 peak for Inter Kashi against Kerala Blasters is matched in later rounds, and whether the league publishes viewing figures beyond the opening week.
