About Chow Chow

Chow chow, also known as chayote or bangalore brinjal, is a low-calorie, low-fat vegetable that is commonly used in everyday cooking in South India. It is commonly used in recipes such as sambar, kootu, thuvayal, and mor kulambu.

I generally use chow chow in kootu because my kids dislike it because it does not have taste, so I decided to try something else with this veggie. I found out this poriyal recipe through a Google search. This chow chow poriyal recipe is quite simple to make. I tell you that your children will enjoy this poriyal. Taste is superb. Extremely soft and delicious. My children adore this poriyal and eat just like that since it is very good. This chow chow poriyal is quick to cook, so you can pack it in kids’ lunchboxes

Ingredients.

  • 2tsp oil
  • 1/2TSP Mustartd seeds
  • 1/2tsp Urad dal
  • Few curry leaves
  • 1 onion
  • 3 green chilies
  • 1/2tsp hing powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3pod garlic

How to make Chow chow poriyal

  • Take a Kadai and heat oil
  • Add mustard seeds and urad dal
  • saute well
  • Add chopped onion, garlic and green chilies.saute well.
  • Add chopped chow chow and mix well
  • Add salt and mix well.
  • Add little water and close the lid and cook for few mins.
  • open the lid after few mins and add grated coconut.
  • chow chow poriyal ready to serve.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • Water as required
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp coconut grated
  • Few curry leaves
  • 2 chow chow chopped
  • 2 green chillies
  • 2 garlic chopped

Instructions
 

  • Take a kadai and heat oil
  • Add mustard seeds and urad dal.
  • Add chopped onions,garlic and green chillies
  • Cook until onion and garlic raw smell goes.
  • Now add chopped chow chow and mix well.
  • Add salt to taste.
  • Cook for few mins and add little water and close the lid.
  • After 5mins open the lid and check whether chow chow is cooked well.
  • If it is cooked well then add grated coconut and mix well.
  • Now chow chow poriyal ready.

Notes

You can add red chilli instead of green chili. Taste will be different.
If you don’t want to add grated coconut then you can add roasted peanut powder also. 
You can use coconut oil for this poriyal. Taste will be excellent.

FAQ

Q) Can we skip grated coconut in this poriyal?

Ans: Yhaa you can skip, instead of coconut you can add dry roasted peanut powder.

Q) Can we cook this recipe in pressure cooker?

Ans: No. If you cook in pressure cooker, then chow chow will become too soft and taste will not be so good so avoid doing in pressure cooker.

Q) Which oil will taste good for this recipe?

Ans: Coconut oil will give you excellent taste.
